Loom Technique

Tradition in Motion

Learn more about Loom Technique

It’s one of the most fascinating textile tools you’ll find in Mexico. Built with a wooden frame, artisans use foot pedals to lift and lower the threads. With every steady, rhythmic movement, the yarns interlace and slowly transform into meters and meters of fabric. Watching it in action feels like listening to a song: each strike of the beater and the “chicotillo” creates a rhythm that has echoed through generations.

Where is it practiced?

Oaxaca, Chiapas and Michoacan

The Loom Technique is practiced in communities across Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Michoacán. In each state, it takes on a unique character: in Oaxaca it is memory woven into fabric, in Chiapas it is a language connecting generations, and in Michoacán it flourishes as a symbol of the bond between nature and tradition.
